解説 Definition
stolid は、人が感情をあまり表に出さず、出来事にも鈍く反応する様子を表す形容詞。単に落ち着いているというより、無表情で冷淡、あるいは鈍感だという否定的な含みを持つことが多く、人物の顔つきや態度の描写で使われる。賞賛語としてはあまり使われない。
If someone is stolid, they stay calm and show very little emotion, even in difficult situations. The word is often used to describe a person who seems serious, unexcited, or not easily affected. It can sound slightly negative if the person seems too cold or unresponsive.

stolid は、見た目が似た solid を足場にすると覚えやすい。solid が「固い・しっかりした」なら、stolid は感情の動きまで固まっていて、表情や反応がほとんど動かない感じ。calm や composed が前向きな「落ち着き」なのに対し、stolid は dull さや鈍さを含みやすい。a stolid expression / a stolid manner のように、人の顔つき・態度に付きやすく、悪い知らせや批判にも顔色を変えないような場面を思い浮かべると定着しやすい。stoic と近いが、stolid のほうが無感情で鈍い響きが強い。

stolid はラテン語 stolidus『鈍い・動かない』が源で、さらに『立ったまま据え置く』感覚の印欧祖語 *stel- にさかのぼる。心が動かされず反応が鈍いという像から『冷静・無感動』となり、stolidity や stultify と並べると“動かなさ”が核だとわかる。
"Stolid" comes from Latin "stolidus," meaning "dull," "heavy," or "unresponsive." The word developed from the idea of being mentally slow or unmoved. In English, that became the sense of showing little feeling or reaction, as also seen in "stolidity."
