If things are straggling, they are spread out in an uneven, loose, or untidy way. It is often used for plants, hair, groups of people, or lines that do not stay together neatly.

straggle「列から離れてだらだら進む」に現在分詞の -ing が付いた形で、語源は北欧系を含むゲルマン系方言にさかのぼると考えられます。一本ずつ散って遅れる像から、straggler や straggly と同様に「乱れた・散在した」という意味になりました。
