解説 Definition
漆喰はセメントや消石灰を主成分とし、外壁や内壁に塗って仕上げる丈夫で耐候性のある塗り材です。薄く塗っても硬化後は強度が出るため建築の外観や装飾に広く使われてきました。表面を平滑にしたり模様をつけたりして様々な意匠表現が可能です。

stucco はイタリア語 stucco に由来し、さらにゲルマン系の「かけら・皮殻」を表す語にさかのぼるとされます。接頭辞には分けにくい語ですが、stock と遠い同根で、「壁を覆う固まった一片」の感覚が漆喰の物質感にそのままつながります。
