Submersion is the state of being completely under water or another liquid. It is used for floods, objects sinking, or the act of putting something below the surface. In technical or scientific contexts, it can also describe full covering by a liquid.

submersion は submerge の名詞形として覚えるのが近道です。sub- は「下へ」、-ion は「動作・状態」の名詞化なので、submerge→submersion とつなげると形も意味も取りやすくなります。核になるのは「水面下にすっかり入る」感覚で、単にぬれるのではなく、完全に沈む・覆われる感じ。immersion も近いですが、submersion はより「下へ沈んで水中に入る」方向。flood が水があふれる出来事なのに対し、submersion は車や土地などが沈んだ結果・状態を言うと整理すると混同しにくいです。
