subplot は sub-「下に・副の」と plot「筋立て、物語の構図」から成る語です。subway や subordinate と同じ sub- をもち、文字通り「主筋の下や横にあるもう一つの筋」と考えると、物語に奥行きを加える副筋、サブプロットという意味に自然につながります。
