解説 Definition
subplot は、物語の主筋とは別に並行して展開する副次的な筋書きを指す。登場人物の背景や主題を補強したり、物語全体に奥行きを与えたりする役割を持つ。『伏線』とは異なり、独立した小さな物語の流れを表す語である。
A subplot is a smaller, secondary story inside a larger story. It usually involves different characters or a different problem, but it connects to the main plot in some way. Subplots often add depth, contrast, or extra interest.

subplot は sub-「下に・副の」と plot「筋立て、物語の構図」から成る語です。subway や subordinate と同じ sub- をもち、文字通り「主筋の下に走るもう一つの筋」なので、副筋や伏線という意味に自然につながります。
