解説 Definition
困難な状況での援助や支援。特に苦難や危険の時期に与えられる救済や助け。
Succor means help or support given to someone who is suffering or in a difficult situation. It is a formal or literary word, often used for emotional, practical, or emergency aid. In everyday English, words like "help" or "relief" are more common.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
help や aid より硬く、苦難のただ中にいる人へ差し伸べる「救いの手」と覚えると定着しやすい語です。災害・戦争・飢えの文脈で provide/offer succor, seek succor の形で出やすいです。support よりも緊急性と切迫感が強いのがポイントです。つづりや音が似る sucker と混同しないこと。succor は「だまされやすい人」ではなく、suffering people への援助を表します。
Remember `succor` as a more serious, formal kind of help. It often appears in crisis contexts, in phrases like `offer succor` or `seek succor`. Compared with `help` or `support`, it sounds more urgent and emotional. Be careful not to mix it up with `sucker`, which is completely different.

succor の語源・成り立ち Etymology
「succor」はラテン語 succurrere「助けに駆けつける」が古フランス語を経て入った語で、sub-「近くへ」+ currere「走る」に分けられます。current や occur と同じ curr- を持ち、「困っている人のもとへ走って行くこと」がそのまま「援助」になった語です。
"Succor" came into English through Old French from Latin "succurrere," meaning "to run to help." It is made from "sub-" in the sense of moving toward, and "currere," meaning "to run," a root also seen in "current" and "occur." The original picture was of someone rushing to another person's side, and that became the idea of aid or relief.
