sullen はアングロ・フランス語 solain「ひとりの、孤独な」を経てラテン語 solus「一人」にさかのぼる語です。solo や solitary と同根で、「孤立して一人でふさぎ込む」感覚が、むっつりした不機嫌さへ変わったと分かると意味のずれが腑に落ちます。
