覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
support「支える」に -ive「その性質を持つ」が付いた語なので、「人を下から支えるような」と捉えます。supportive parents、a supportive team のように、人の決定を励ましたり実際に助けたりする関係で頻出します。単に賛成するだけでなく、精神的・実務的な支援があることを表します。
Break supportive into support plus -ive, an ending that forms adjectives meaning “having the quality of” or “tending to.” A supportive person does more than simply agree: they may listen, encourage, defend a decision, or provide practical help. Learn common combinations such as supportive parents, a supportive friend, and a supportive work environment. Picture support as holding something up from below; supportive behavior similarly helps another person remain confident, stable, or able to continue through difficulty.

supportive の語源・成り立ち Etymology
supportive は support + -ive「〜する性質の」で、support はラテン語 supportare「下から運ぶ・支える」に由来します。sub-「下から」+ portare「運ぶ」で、portable や transport と同根です。つまり supportive は「下から支えて助けるような」という感覚です。
Supportive was formed in English from support and the adjective-forming suffix -ive. Support came through French from Latin supportare, “to carry or bring up,” formed from sub-, “from below,” and portare, “to carry.” The physical sense of holding something up developed into the emotional and practical sense of helping a person. Portable and transport contain the same Latin root connected with carrying.
