Technicolor was coined in the early twentieth century as the name of a commercial motion-picture color company and its processes. Its formation combines a shortened technology-related element, ultimately associated with Greek technē, “art, craft, or skill,” with color, which entered English through French and Latin color. The proprietary name came to be strongly associated with vivid color cinematography and later developed a broader figurative use for strikingly rich or varied colors.
