裁縫の際に、指を保護するために使う小さな金属製または硬いケースです。針が指に刺さることを防ぎます。

thimble の語源・成り立ち Etymology
thimble は中英語 thimel、さらに古英語 þymel「親指の覆い」にさかのぼります。thumb「親指」が語幹で、-el は道具名の接尾辞。handle と同じ作りで、針を押すため指にはめる道具だと語形から納得できます。
