thimble は中英語 thimbel、古英語 þymel に由来し、thumb「親指」と関係します。元は指を覆う小物の発想で、そこから小さな保護用の輪状部品にも広がりました。
Thimble comes from Middle English thimbel and Old English thymel. It is related to thumb and originally referred to a small cover for the finger. From that idea of a small protective piece, the word was later also used for a protective ring-shaped fitting.
