胸部

人間の上半身で、首と腹部の間にあり、心臓や肺といった臓器を収める領域。胸郭の骨で囲まれた空間で、呼吸や循環にかかわる構造を保護している。一般に胸部と呼ばれる部分のこと。
The thorax is the part of the body between the neck and the abdomen, often called the chest in humans. It contains important organs such as the heart and lungs. In biology, the word is also used for the middle section of an insect's body.

thorax はギリシャ語 thorax「胸当て・胸」が語源で、もとは体の前面を守る鎧を指しました。そこから人や昆虫の「胸部」の名になり、thoracic や thoracotomy に同じ語根が見えます。鎧のように胴の中心部を守る場所だと考えると、意味の伸び方がつかみやすい語です。
"Thorax" comes from Greek "thorax," which meant both "breastplate" and "chest." The word first referred to armor protecting the front of the body. From that, it naturally came to mean the chest area itself in anatomy, including in insects. Related words include "thoracic."
