止血帯とは、出血を止めるために手足に巻きつける医療用の帯状の器具です。傷口からの出血を圧迫して抑制し、血液の流出を防ぎます。
A tourniquet is a tight band or device used to stop heavy bleeding from an arm or leg. It is mainly used in medical or emergency situations. Because it affects blood flow, it is usually mentioned in serious first-aid contexts.

tourniquet はフランス語 tourniquet に由来し、動詞 tourner「回す」へ、さらにラテン語 tornare「回転させる」へさかのぼる。帯を棒で回して締める器具だったので止血帯の意味になった。tour や tournament も同系で、核は「回す」感覚にある。
Tourniquet came into English from French tourniquet. It goes back to the verb tourner, meaning "to turn," and further to Latin tornare, also connected with turning. The name first referred to a device tightened by twisting, and from that it became the medical word for a band used to stop bleeding.
