trialling は trial に -ing が付いた形で、trial は古フランス語 trier（選り分ける、試す）に由来します。try や retrial と同根で、もとは「試して見きわめる」感覚です。だから trialling は、完成前のものを実地で試しながら確かめている状態を表します。
Trialling is trial with the ending -ing. Trial came through Old French from trier, meaning "to sort out" or "to test," and it is related to try and retrial. The word keeps that old idea of testing something in order to judge or prove it.
