食道の
解説
食道に関する、または食道に生じることを表す医学的な形容詞。器官そのものの構造や働きだけでなく、食道炎、食道がん、組織、筋肉の動きなど、食道に関連する症状・疾患・検査・部位の説明に用いられる。
覚え方のコツ
まず名詞 oesophagus / esophagus「食道」を知っていると楽です。oesophageal はそこに「〜に関する」を作る -al が付いた形で、「食道の」という医学形容詞だと取れます。感覚としては gastric（胃の）, intestinal（腸の）と同じ仲間。よく見るのは oesophageal cancer, oesophageal reflux, oesophageal varices などで、病名・症状名の前に置かれやすい語です。なお oe- は英式、米式では esophageal と綴るので、別語だと思わず同一語として覚えると混乱しません。

oesophageal は Greek oisophagos を経た oesophagus「食道」に由来し、oiso-「運ぶ」+ phag-「食べる」の結合です。phagocyte や dysphagia にも同じ phag- があり、「食べ物を運ぶ管」という像から意味がつかめます。
