triassic
解説 Definition
The geological period between the Permian and Jurassic periods, forming the earliest part of the Mesozoic Era. It began after a major mass extinction and includes the time when the first dinosaurs and early mammals appeared; the name is normally capitalized.
Memory Tip
Permian → Triassic → Jurassic。the Triassic period、during the Triassic
Use tri-, “three,” as the key to Triassic: the period was named from a three-part sequence of rock formations recognized in Germany. Fix its place with the order Permian, Triassic, Jurassic. This timeline prevents confusion with the later Jurassic, which is more strongly associated in popular culture with dinosaurs. Useful patterns are the Triassic period, during the Triassic, and Triassic rocks. English normally capitalizes the formal geological name. You can also connect tri- with familiar words such as triangle and triad, while remembering that Triassic itself names one specific period, not simply anything divided into three.

Etymology
関連語:triad(三つ組)、triangle(三角形)。
Triassic was formed from German Trias, “triad” or “group of three,” with the adjectival suffix -ic. The German geologist Friedrich August von Alberti introduced the geological term in 1834 for three major rock divisions recognized in Germany. Trias ultimately comes from Greek trias, “a group of three.” The English term became the formal name for the geological period between the Permian and Jurassic, conventionally written with a capital T.
