trias
三畳紀
解説 Definition
地質学的時代。またはグループまたは三つ。
Trias is an old geological name for the Triassic Period or for the system of rocks formed during that period. It occurs mainly in historical or older scientific writing; modern English normally uses Triassic instead.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
Trias は現代英語の Triassic に相当する古い地質学用語です。ギリシャ語で「三つ組」を表す語から来ており、命名時にドイツの地層が三つの主要区分に分けられたことと結び付けます。Trias rocks や the Trias period のような古い文献の表現を見たら、現在の the Triassic と読み替えると理解しやすくなります。
Link Trias to tri-, the familiar idea of three in words such as triangle and trinity. The geological name was chosen because the relevant German rock sequence was divided into three major units. When you encounter “Trias rocks” or “the Trias period” in older writing, mentally replace Trias with the modern term Triassic. That substitution keeps the meaning precise: it refers to the geological period or its rock system, not simply to any group of three. In modern scientific English, Triassic is the form you are much more likely to use.

trias の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語 trias(τριάς「三つ組」)に由来し、treis(三)が語根。1834年にドイツの地質学者アルベルティが、この時代の地層が三層(砂岩・石灰岩・泥灰岩)に分かれることから命名した。関連語: triangle, trinity。「三」が地質時代の名前になった例。
Trias comes through scientific usage from Greek triás, meaning “a group of three,” related to treîs, “three.” In 1834, the German geologist Friedrich August von Alberti applied the corresponding term to a sequence of three major rock divisions: Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk, and Keuper. English Trias became an older name for what is now generally called the Triassic Period or Triassic System.
