conduit は古フランス語 conduit「水路・導くもの」からで、さらにラテン語 conducere（con-「共に」+ ducere「導く」）にさかのぼる。水や何かを目的地へ導いて通す発想から「導管」になり、conduct や aqueduct にも同じ ducere の「導く」感覚が残る。
