The astronomical name Triton comes through Latin Triton from Greek Tritōn, the name of a sea god, traditionally the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. The deeper origin of the mythological name is uncertain. Astronomers applied it to Neptune’s largest moon because Neptune bears the Roman name of the sea god corresponding to Greek Poseidon. The name was formally adopted long after the satellite’s discovery in 1846.
