tugboat の語源・成り立ち Etymology
tugboat は tug「ぐいと引く」+ boat「船」の複合語で、tug は中英語 tuggen「強く引っぱる」に由来します。つまり「他の船を引いて動かす船」という成り立ちで、tug や tug-of-war にも同じ“引く力”の感覚が残っています。
Tugboat is a transparent compound of tug and boat. The verb tug developed from Middle English tuggen, meaning to pull hard or drag, while boat is an old Germanic word for a small vessel. The compound therefore literally means a boat used for tugging. The forceful pulling sense of tug also survives in expressions such as tug-of-war, though modern tugboats may push or guide ships as well as tow them.
