ulu はイヌイット語系の Inuktitut ᐅᓗ（olo/ulu、「女性の包丁」）から英語に入った借用語です。生活道具の固有名がそのまま英語化したので、半月形の刃物を直接指す語になりました。近い形に Inupik の ulo があります。
