If something is unanswerable, it cannot be answered clearly or completely. It is often used for very difficult questions, impossible problems, or statements that cannot be reasonably defended.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
`un-` は否定、`answer` は「答える」、`-able` は「〜できる」。つまり「答えられる」の反対で、形をそのまま分解すると覚えやすい語です。まず `answerable` = 答えられる を押さえると、`unanswerable` は一気に取れます。特に `an unanswerable question` なら「難しい」ではなく「そもそも答えが立たない」「解答できない」質問。`unanswered` は「まだ答えが付いていない」だけなので、答えが存在しない・出せない `unanswerable` とは切り分けて覚えると混同しません。
Break it into `un-` + `answer` + `-able`. If `answerable` means something can be answered, `unanswerable` is the direct opposite. Also compare it with `unanswered`: that only means no answer has been given yet, not that no real answer is possible.
