unfolds は unfold の三人称単数形で、接頭辞 un-「逆に戻す」＋ fold「折る」から成ります。fold は古英語 fealdan にさかのぼり、もとは「折ったものを開く」という感覚なので、物だけでなく話や事件が「次第に展開する」意味にも広がりました。関連語は fold、folder です。
Unfolds consists of unfold plus the third-person singular present ending -s. Unfold was formed in English from un-, expressing reversal, and fold, from Old English fealdan, “to bend or fold.” Its literal meaning is to open something that has been folded. From the image of revealing one part after another, the verb developed a figurative sense for stories, events, plans, and facts gradually developing or becoming known.
