解説 Definition

束縛や抑制から解放され、自由に動いたり力を発揮したりできる状態。動物のほか、抑えられていた感情・創造力などにも使う。

Unleashed describes a person, animal, force, emotion, or ability that has been released from restraint or control. It may refer literally to removal of a leash or figuratively to energy, creativity, violence, or other power being allowed to act fully.

使い方 Usage

  • an unleashed dog は「綱を外された犬」。unleashed creativity / fury は、抑えられていた創造力・激しい怒りが解き放たれた状態。 An unleashed dog has been freed from its leash. Unleashed creativity and unleashed fury describe creativity or intense anger released from restraint.
  • unleash の過去分詞を形容詞として使った形。語末が /ʃ/ なので、-ed は /t/ と発音する。 Unleashed is the past-participle form of unleash used as an adjective. Since unleash ends in /ʃ/, the -ed ending is pronounced /t/.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

un-「外す」+ leash「つなぎ綱」から、綱を外された犬が自由に走る姿を思い浮かべる。その解放のイメージを力や感情にもつなげる。

Combine un- with leash and picture a dog running freely after its leash is removed. Extend that image of release to forces and feelings.

unleashed の語源・成り立ち Etymology

un-(否定接頭辞)+ leash(革紐)から成る unleash の過去分詞形。leash は古フランス語 laisse(紐)、さらにラテン語 laxus(緩い)に遡る。関連語: lax(緩い)、relax(くつろぐ)。「繋いでいた紐を外す」が原義で、力や感情を解き放つ比喩に発展した。

Unleashed is the past-participle form of unleash, built from un- and leash. Here un- has the reversative sense “remove or undo,” so the verb originally refers to taking an animal off its restraining line. Leash entered English through Old French laisse and is historically connected with Latin laxus, meaning loose. The literal action of releasing an animal naturally developed figurative uses for releasing power, emotion, destruction, or creativity.
