un-「〜していない」＋tried「試された」から成る語です。try は古フランス語 trier（より分けて確かめる、試す）にさかのぼるため、untried は「まだ試して確かめられていない」ことから「試していない・未経験の」を表します。関連語は trial, retry。
Untried combines un-, meaning "not," with tried, the past form of try. Try came through Old French trier, originally meaning to sort out, pick, or test. So untried first meant "not yet tested," and from there it also came to describe someone or something without experience.
