urethane はフランス語 uréthane からで、urea（尿素）+ ether（エーテル）+ 化学接尾辞 -ane の合成語。語頭の ure- はギリシャ語 ouron「尿」にさかのぼり、urine や urea と同根で、もとは尿素由来の化合物だったとわかる。
Urethane came into English from French uréthane. It was formed in chemistry from urea and ether, with the chemical ending -ane. The ure- part goes back to Greek ouron, meaning "urine," the same root seen in urine and urea. The name first referred to a compound connected with urea chemistry.
