解説 Definition

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

we は動作をする側、us は動作を受ける側と対にして覚えると定着しやすいです。We helped her. なら「私たちが」、She helped us. なら「私たちを」となります。また、for us、with us、to us のように前置詞の後では必ず us を使う、と文の位置ごと覚えましょう。

Learn we and us as a subjectobject pair, just like they and them. Use we for the people performing an action: “We helped her.” Use us when those people receive the action: “She helped us.” Also choose us after a preposition, as in for us, with us, and to us. A quick test is to replace the group with “me”: if the sentence needs me rather than I, it likewise needs us rather than we.

us の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語の一人称複数代名詞 ūs に由来し、ゲルマン諸語に共通する古い語です。主語として使う we に対する目的格で、動作を受ける側や前置詞の後に置かれる「私たち」を表します。

Us comes from Old English ūs, an objective form of the first-person plural pronoun. It has cognates in other Germanic languages and belongs to one of the oldest layers of English vocabulary. Modern English preserves the distinction between subject we and object us: we normally performs the action, whereas us receives it or follows a preposition.
