vaudeville は、19世紀末から20世紀初頭のアメリカで広く親しまれた大衆演芸・軽演劇を指す名詞です。歌、踊り、寸劇、奇術、曲芸などの短い演目を次々に見せる形式が特徴で、家族向けの娯楽として劇場で上演されました。

vaudeville はフランス語で、もとは Vau de Vire「ヴィール川の谷」の歌を指した語です。地名由来なので接頭辞分解より「その土地の風刺歌」が出発点で、vau と同系の valley や vale を思い出すと、大衆芸能への広がりが腑に落ちます。
`Vaudeville` came from French and originally referred to songs from the `Vau de Vire`, a valley in Normandy. The name began as a place-name, then came to mean light, often satirical popular songs associated with that area.
