解説 Definition

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず provoke を「挑発する・引き起こす」で押さえると、un- が付いた unprovoked は「挑発されてもいないのに起きた」と捉えやすいです。特に unprovoked attack / assault / criticism の形でよく出て、「相手に先に何かされたわけではない」という含みが強い語です。provoked response が「挑発を受けて起きた反応」だと対にして覚えると混同しにくく、groundless よりも“原因行為なしの攻撃・非難”に焦点があると意識すると定着します。
Start with `provoke`, which is often used for causing or triggering a reaction. Add `un-`, and the idea becomes something that happened without being triggered first. It is especially common in phrases like `unprovoked attack` or `unprovoked criticism`.

unprovoked の語源・成り立ち Etymology
unprovokedは古英語un-「〜ない」と、ラテン語provocare「前へ呼び出す」に由来するprovokeから成ります。感情や行動を呼び起こすことがprovokeなので、何にも刺激されず起きたことから「いわれのない」という意味になります。近縁語にinvoke、revokeがあります。
Unprovoked combines un- with provoked. Provoke comes from Latin provocare, meaning "to call forth," from pro- "forward" and vocare "to call." The sense moved from calling something out or stirring it up to causing a reaction, so unprovoked came to mean happening without anything having stirred it up; compare invoke and revoke.
