心臓の下部にある空洞で、血液を心臓から送り出す役割を持ちます。右心室は肺へ、左心室は全身へ血液を送り出し、心臓のポンプ機能の中心的な部分です。

ventricle はラテン語 ventriculus「小さな腹・小さなふくらみ」に由来し、venter「腹」に縮小語尾 -culus がついた形です。ventral や ventriloquist も同じ ventr- 系で、もとは『腹のように中が空いた小部屋』という発想から、心臓で血液を押し出す空洞＝心室を指すと分かります。
