前室とは、建物の玄関と奥の部屋の間に位置する入口ホールまたは通路です。訪問者を迎え入れる空間として機能します。
A vestibule is a small entrance area just inside the main door of a building. The word can also be used for a similar connecting space in places like trains, churches, or large public buildings.

ラテン語 vestibulum「家の前庭・入口」が語源で、のちにフランス語経由で英語に入りました。建物の“外から中へ入る手前の場所”という原義が、そのまま「前室」の意味につながります。関連語に invest（衣服をまとう→与える）ではなく、語感の近い vestige がありますが、語源は別です。
Vestibule comes from Latin vestibulum, meaning an entrance court or space before the house. It entered English through French. The original idea of an area between outside and inside stayed central as the word developed.
