`voluntarism` は `voluntary`＋`-ism` でできた語です。`voluntary` はアングロ・フランス語を経てラテン語 `voluntarius`、さらに `voluntas`「意志」にさかのぼり、`volition` と同根。もとの「自分の意志による」という感覚に `-ism` が付いて、社会活動などを強制でなく自発的参加で支える主義・原則を表します。
Voluntarism comes from voluntary plus the suffix -ism. Voluntary goes back through Anglo-French and Latin voluntarius to voluntas, meaning "will" or "choice," the same root seen in volition. The word came to mean a doctrine that gives special importance to the will, especially in philosophy. It was also influenced by German Voluntarismus in academic use.
