vouchは古フランス語voucherを経てラテン語vocare「呼ぶ」にさかのぼる語で、もとは「証人として呼ぶ」感覚をもつ。だから単なる約束より、名を出して保証する響きが強い。関連語にvoice、advocateがある。
Vouch came through Old French voucher and goes back to Latin vocare, meaning "to call." The early idea was to call someone forward as a witness or supporter. Because of that, the word developed the sense of giving personal assurance or backing for something. Related English words from the same Latin root include voice and advocate.
