結婚している状態や婚姻関係を指す語で、法的に夫婦として結び付けられた状況を表す。配偶者との責任や権利が帯びられる法的絆として理解される。婚外の関係と対比する際には、婚姻の枠内で生まれた者やその状態を示すためにも使われる。
