Wedlock is a formal or old-fashioned word for the state of being married. It is most often seen in set phrases, especially when talking about children born inside or outside marriage. In modern everyday English, marriage is much more common.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
wedlock は wedding の wed が見えれば結婚の語だとつながる。まず wed = marry を押さえ、そこに lock が付くので、「恋愛中」ではなく法的・社会的に結びつきが固定された状態とイメージすると残りやすい。ふつうの会話では marriage のほうが一般的で、wedlock はやや古風・文語的。in wedlock「婚姻内で」、out of wedlock / born out of wedlock「婚外で・婚外子」が定番表現。wedding は式、wedlock は結婚している状態そのもの。
