whatは古英語hwæt（何）でゲルマン祖語に遡り、印欧語根kwo-（疑問を表す）が起源。aboutは古英語onbūtan（周囲に）からで、a-（on）＋bout（外側）の合成語。「～の周りはどう？」→「～についてはどう思う？」と提案や意見を求める表現に発展した。
