whitlow は中英語 whitflaw が変化した語で、前半はオランダ語・低地ドイツ語系の vijt/fit「腫れ物」が混ざったとされる。後半は flaw「裂け目・欠け」系で、white＋low ではなく、指先の腫れて裂けた感じをそのまま名にした語と見える。関連語は flaw、flake。
