古英語の「Windlesora」に由来し、「windels（巻き上げ機）」と「ōra（岸）」の合成で「巻き上げ機のある河岸」が原義。テムズ川沿いの地名で、英王室がウィンザー城に因み1917年に王朝名として採用した。
Windsor comes from the Old English place-name Windlesora, traditionally interpreted as “riverbank with a windlass,” combining a word for a winding device with ōra, “bank” or “shore.” The place stood beside the Thames. In 1917, Britain’s royal family adopted Windsor as its dynastic name, taking it from Windsor Castle.
