abridgement は abridge + -ment『結果・もの』。abridge は古フランス語経由でラテン語 brevis『短い』に結びつき、brief や abbreviate と同根だから、『長いものを短くした結果』がそのまま要約になる。
Abridgement comes from abridge plus the suffix -ment, which often names a result or product. Abridge came through Old French and goes back to Latin brevis, meaning "short," the same root seen in brief and abbreviate. So the word originally meant the result of making something shorter.
