An abridgment is a shorter version of a book, text, or other work that keeps the main points. It is often made to save time or make the content easier to read. The word can also refer to the act of reducing something in length.

abridgment は動詞 abridge の名詞形として覚えると整理しやすいです。-ment は結果物を表す形で、develop→development のような流れと同じ。まず unabridged（完全版）と対で覚えると定着します。summary が要点だけを短く述べるのに対し、abridgment は元の本・辞書・文章を土台に、内容の骨格を保ったまま短くした「版」を指しやすい語です。abridged edition, dictionary abridgment などの形で場面ごと覚えると混同しにくくなります。
Notice the family: `abridge` -> `abridgment`. The ending `-ment` often names the result, so this is the shortened version that comes from abridging something. It is easy to remember with its opposite, `unabridged`.
