Acquainted comes from acquaint plus -ed. Because acquaint ends in /t/, the ending is pronounced as an extra syllable, /ɪd/. Although historically a participial form, it is commonly used as an adjective. Learn the patterns be acquainted with someone or something and get acquainted. If two people are acquainted, they know each other but are not necessarily friends; if you are acquainted with rules or a subject, you possess some relevant knowledge. This makes acquainted weaker than close and often less complete than thoroughly familiar, while still showing more connection than simply having heard of something.

acquainted の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 accognoscere(よく知る)から古フランス語 acointier を経て英語に入った。ac-(~へ)+ cognoscere(知る)の構成で、cognition(認知)やrecognize(認識する)と同根。「よく知っている状態になる」が原義で、人と面識がある意味に発展した。

Acquainted is the -ed form of acquaint and now commonly functions as an adjective. The French word is historically associated with Latin cognoscere, “to know,” which also lies behind English words connected with cognition and recognition. Adding -ed produces the sense of having been made familiar or known. Since acquaint ends in /t/, the suffix is pronounced /ɪd/.
