Advection is the movement of something, such as heat, moisture, or pollution, from one place to another by the flow of air, water, or another fluid. It is a technical term used in meteorology, physics, and environmental science. The focus is on transport by movement of the fluid itself.

advection は気象・流体で convection とセットで覚えると残りやすい語。どちらも「何かが運ばれる」現象だが、convection が温度差で空気や水が上下に循環する動きを指しやすいのに対し、advection は風や海流に乗って熱・水蒸気・塩分などが横方向へ運ばれる場面でよく使う。warm-air advection, cold-air advection の形で見かけたら、「その場で広がる diffusion ではなく、流れに乗って移動すること」と結びつけると定着しやすい。名詞の -tion なので「現象名」だと見抜ける。
