aesthetics の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ギリシャ語 aisthētikos「感覚で知覚する」が源で、aisthanesthai「感じる」にさかのぼります。美はまず感覚で受け取るものという発想から「美学」に。関連語は aesthetic、anesthesia。

Aesthetics ultimately comes from Greek aisthētikos, meaning “concerned with sensory perception,” from aisthanesthai, “to perceive or feel.” The modern philosophical use developed through the German term Ästhetik, especially in eighteenth-century discussions of sensory knowledge, beauty, and art. English adopted aesthetic and aesthetics from this scholarly tradition. The related word anesthesia contains the same Greek sensory root with an- meaning “without,” literally indicating absence of sensation.
