イングランド・ヨークシャー地方の Airedale（エア川の谷）に由来する地名語。Aire はケルト語系の川の名、dale は古英語 dæl（谷）から。関連語に dale（谷）がある。19世紀にこの地域で作出されたテリア犬種で、産地がそのまま犬種名になった。
Airedale comes from the place name Airedale in Yorkshire, England. Aire is the river name, probably from an older Celtic source, and dale comes from Old English dael, meaning "valley." The dog breed was developed in that district in the 19th century, so the local place name became the breed name.
