alerting は原形 alert に -ing を付けた現在分詞・動名詞で、綴りはそのままつなげます。alert users to heavy rain、alert staff when the temperature rises のように、「人に危険・重要情報を知らせて注意を向けさせる」場面で覚えましょう。単なる informing より、すぐ注意や対応が必要という含みがあります。
Connect alerting with making someone mentally “stand ready.” An app alerting users to heavy rain does more than provide neutral information: it draws attention to something that may require action. Learn the common structure alert someone to something, as in alert staff to a problem. Alerting is made by adding -ing directly to alert, with no doubled consonant or other spelling change. It can appear in a continuous tense, the system is alerting staff, or as a gerund describing the activity. Compared with informing, alerting more strongly suggests urgency, risk, or special importance.

alerting の語源・成り立ち Etymology
イタリア語の号令「all'erta(見張り台へ)」に由来し、「a(~へ)+erta(高台)」に分解されます。高い位置で敵を警戒する様子から「危険の知らしめ」へ転じ、接尾辞-ingが進行形を作ります。直立を意味するerectと語源を同じくし、注意を促すピンとした姿勢が意味の核心です。
Alerting is formed from alert plus the participial suffix -ing. Alert came into English through French from the Italian warning call all’erta, literally an instruction to be on the watch or at a high lookout. The expression is connected with erta, a height or raised position, ultimately related to Latin forms meaning erect or upright. The idea developed from physically taking a watchful position to being attentive and warning other people of danger.
