解説 Definition
アメリカ南東部や中国にすむワニの仲間です。幅広く丸みのある鼻先が特徴で、川や沼地などの淡水域で暮らします。英語では crocodile と区別され、日本語では一般に「アリゲーター」と呼ばれます。
An alligator is a large reptile with a long body, strong tail, and many teeth, living mainly in water. It is similar to a crocodile, but they are different animals. The word is usually used when talking about wildlife, zoos, or nature.

alligator の語源・成り立ち Etymology
alligatorはスペイン語el lagarto「そのトカゲ」が英語化した語で、elは冠詞、lagartoが本体。英語話者が語全体を名詞と思って取り込み、切れ目の勘違いまで定着した。関連語lizard、lagartoも同系で、「巨大なトカゲ」という見立てが名に残る。
Alligator came from Spanish el lagarto, literally "the lizard." English speakers took the whole phrase as one word, including the article el, and reshaped it into alligator. The word kept the sense of a large reptile, but its form shows a misunderstanding of where the word was divided. Spanish lagarto and English lizard are related in history.
