解説 Definition
「ワニ」は、熱帯・亜熱帯地域の川や湖に生息する大型の爬虫類です。鋭い歯と強力なあごを持ち、水中と陸上の両方で活動することができます。英語では主に「crocodile」と「alligator」の二種類があり、吻（ふん）の形などで見分けることができます。

crocodile はギリシャ語 krokodeilos がラテン語 crocodilus を経て英語に入った語です。語源は「小石」と「虫・トカゲ」を結びつけた形とされ、川辺のごつごつした皮膚のワニを表したと考えると覚えやすく、crocodilian や Crocodylus が関連語です。
Crocodile entered English through Old French and Latin crocodilus, from Greek krokodeilos.
