amountは古フランス語amonter（amont＝山の上へ）に由来し、「上に積み上がる→合計に達する」が原義。ラテン語ad montem（山へ向かって）が語源で、mount（山）やmountain（山岳）と同根。数値が積み上がって到達するイメージ。
Amount comes from Old French amonter, literally "go up," from a form related to mont, "mountain." The basic image is of something rising or piling upward until it reaches a level. From that, amount to developed the sense of "add up to" and then more broadly "be equal to" or "come to."
