antic はイタリア語 antico「古代風の」から来て、さらにラテン語 antiquus「古い」にさかのぼります。antique や antiquity と同根で、古代の壁画や装飾にいた奇妙な人物像を「古風な変なもの」と見た感覚から、「おどけたふるまい」になりました。
