sleuthing は sleuth＋-ing で、sleuth は古ノルド語 slóð「足跡・獣道」に由来します。もとは「探偵」より先に「追うべき跡」を表し、そこから「跡をたどる捜査」へ広がりました。sleuth や sleuth-hound を見ると、捜査がもともと足跡読みだったと分かります。
