予想する
解説 Definition
今後起こるであろうことを前もって考えることです。未来の出来事や状況を予想し、準備することを意味します。
To anticipate means to expect that something will happen and think about it before it does. It can also mean to prepare for a future event or need in advance. The word is common in planning, business, and everyday situations.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
expect が「起こりそうだと思う」なら、anticipate はその一歩先で「起こりそうだから前もって見込み、備える」。単なる予想より、結果を先回りして行動する含みが強い語として覚えると残りやすい。anticipate problems, anticipate demand, anticipate change のように、問題・需要・変化を先読みする場面で頻出。predict は言い当てる感じ、anticipate は備える感じ、という対比も有効。
Anticipate is more active than expect. It means you see something coming and prepare early, as in anticipate problems or anticipate demand. Predict is about saying what will happen; anticipate is about being ready for it.
例文
We anticipate rain next week.
私たちは来週、雨が降ると予想しています。
She could anticipate the customer's needs before they asked.
彼女は顧客が口にする前に、そのニーズを先回りして把握できました。
The company anticipated increased demand for the product.
その会社はその製品への需要の増加を予想しました。

anticipate の類義語・関連語
anticipate の語源・成り立ち Etymology
anticipate はラテン語 anticipare に由来し、ante-「前もって」+ capere「つかむ・取る」から成る。出来事を先に“つかむ”という発想が「予想する」につながる。capture や captive も同じ capere の仲間。
Anticipate comes from Latin anticipare, built from ante- "before" and capere "to take" or "seize." The original idea was to "take hold of" something ahead of time. From that, it came to mean expecting or dealing with something before it happens. Capture and captive come from the same Latin root capere.
