flavour の語源・成り立ち Etymology
flavour は古フランス語 flaor「香り」から来て、さらに俗ラテン語 flator、ラテン語 flare「吹く」にさかのぼります。もとは「風に乗って漂うにおい」のことで、そこから香り込みの味わい、つまり「風味」へ意味が広がりました。関連語に inflate、deflate があります。
Flavour comes through Old French from a word meaning "smell" or "odor," and it is linked further back to Latin flare, "to blow." The original image is of a smell carried on the air. From that, the word widened from scent to the full taste-and-smell impression of something; inflate and deflate come from the same Latin root.
